Kids: 6 easy rules
- Stay where an adult can see you.
- Wear a life jacket near open water.
- Never swim alone — always use the buddy system.
- Don’t push or play rough near the edge.
- If a friend is in trouble: get an adult fast.
- Know the “stop” zones and signs.
Adults: prevention checklist
- Assign a water watcher (phone away, eyes up).
- Use life jackets for weak swimmers and children.
- Watch weather, temperature, and currents.
- Keep a float or throw ring within reach.
- Review emergency steps before entering the water.
- Model safe behavior — kids copy adults.
Recognize drowning (it is often silent)
- Head low, mouth at water level
- Gasping, quiet, unable to call out
- Trying to roll onto back
- Vertical body, little/no kicking
- Eyes glassy, unfocused, or closed
If you’re unsure, treat it as an emergency and get help immediately.
